Receiving the Best Treatment for Back Pain
Giving Patients What They Want

How can we help you?
A question that straight forward should be easy to answer and easy to respond to. We all know that is not always the case. Some people have a hard time answering that question. Some people have a hard time understanding the answer. We all have our biases and expectations that sometimes get in the way of clear communication.
I go back and forth from thinking I am good at understanding patients when they respond to that question to some days feeling like I struggle to fully comprehend.
Several studies have been published in medical journals in the past few months that help clarify what most patients want when they consult a Physician or a Physical Therapist and how we can satisfy those wants.
These studies pointed out that people seeking out non-surgical treatment for back or spinal pain want: 1. education about their condition, 2. an individualized exercise program for long term management, and 3. a Therapist or Physician with good communication skills that encouraged shared decision making in the treatment process.
UNFORTUNATELY - These same studies report that those things that patients most often want are not recommended. Patients are far more likely to receive a prescription for medicine than for physical therapy for back pain despite significant evidence to support the opposite approach.
Our treatment approach McLaughlin Judd Physical Therapy, based on the MDT (McKenzie) approach is centered on individualized exercise based on a thorough evaluation, education regarding self management and mechanics of the injury process, and discussion about which strategies will work best with your individual strengths and weaknesses.
Request Physical Therapy as your preferred treatment for back pain. If its education, individualized exercise, and shared decision making you want, McLaughlin Judd Physical Therapy can help.
